Skip James born in Mississippi was a sharecropper and made bootleg Whiskey in the 1920's before developing his three finger picking style often played in an open E-minor tuning giving a dark feel to a lot of his early performances.
He played during the 20's and 30's and then seems to have disappeared from the Blues scene during the Great Depression and became a choir director and was later ordained into both the Baptist and Methodist Church.
This video is from 1967 and was presumably filmed after his re discovered during the 60's blues revival.
