He was born in Berhamsted Boarding School, where his father was Headmaster. His parents were first cousins. According to his autobiography, he was profoundly depressed and bullied at school and made several suicide attempts, including by playing Russian Roulette. Aged 16 he was sent to London for Psychoanalysis. His obsession with danger carried on into his adult life, with much of his fiction being based on his real life experiences. Spizz, in their various guises, was a favourite of mine when I was a schoolboy in the early 80s. This was their first single release from 1978, as Spizz Oil.”
