I was reminded of this song the other day. It's an old favorite, sad and lovely.
I have to admit I'm very fond of this, sad ending and all
And the sun it was gold, though the sky it was gray, and she wanted more than she ever could say.
I spent most of the 80s and 90s being the soldier in this song.

Suzanne Vega admitted interviews that the construction of this song took several months, and started off strangely with two queens and a war waging inside the same castle. When that proved futile, she moved the war to just outside the walls, removed one of the queens, and introduced the soldier. After toying with it off and on, one day "the rhymes seemed to suggest themselves."
