As much as I think 1989 is a decent album, it's missing that killer track that her preceding albums always had. I'm not talking about the catchy, lyrically fun albums she could rattle off at the drop of a hat. I'm talking about the one or two songs per album that are just full of pathos and seems to be ripped straight from somewhere not so sunny in her psyche. There's no "All Too Well", "Back to December", "White Horse", no "Tim McGraw" here. And I think the album's poorer for it. I know she's going in new pop direction, but even the best pop albums have one melt your heart ballad now and again. That to me is where her true strength lies. Those are the songs that make me a fan in the first place.
You call me up again just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest. I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here. 'Cause I remember it all, all, all... too well. Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it
I'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it. After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own. Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone. But you keep my old scarf from that very first week. 'Cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me. You can't get rid of it 'cause you remember it all too well.
