Early Boomtown Rats was far more Springsteen than Sex Pistols. THey were never a comfortable shoe in for Punk and never really post-punk enough to be truly new wave. I'm not going to make grandiose claims about 'transcending both genres'. They didn't. They were what they were and they were bloody good at it! I'm not sure they were ever 'cool' as such - although they were popular, obviously, but when you come up with balladry this fine, it hardly matters about cool. There is glorious, tragic romance to it. A much under-rated and rather wonderful band.
