Joe Meek was a production genius/mad scientist, light years ahead of his time.

Despite being on a couple Joe Meek compilations in my collection, this song didn't register with me until it was featured in "The Place Beyond the Pines." I heard it on the radio over the weekend and have played it on repeat for two days straight now. I'd say that constitutes "my jam" of the moment. Joe Meek died on this day in 1967, but this production is evidence of how far ahead of his time he was. I could easily hear this arrangement covered by Massive Attack or even The XX. Killer vocal by Charlie Crane too.   2

One of Burt Bacharach's earliest hit waxings, this Drifters classic later became Joe Meek's final chart hit. Here it is in all its unearthly glory.
