Another Day by The Cure

(early 1979) Another one of those songs where a single effect can turn an otherwise yawn inducing post-punk nasal whine and acoustic into something that sticks with me. I hugely like reverb-heavy noodling on the psychedelic chords, so much so that I often listen to Cream, though I'd never put up a song of theirs here. A lot of slow punk ends up in this territory, and it evokes for me (at least in terms of the instrumentals) the sludge of post-'91 punk/grunge. I wouldn't really want a Staley or a Cornell (or a Jack Bruce) on this track - but listen for their backing bands after the snare roll and cymbal cut out at 1:38 or so. "Something, something holds me hypnotized -" What a duet, with the guitarist abusing the modulator to render even the shoegazy games unrecognizable, before an afterthought of a verse. "I stare at the window, waiting for the day to go, winter in watercolors, shades of gray."
