TRULY Shocking lyrics in this song and I hope I haven't trod on @aHandfulOfRain 's toes & posted the number one of his 'most disturbing songs' theme ahead of him!
The singer & songwriter Colin Meloy actually wrote this dreadful tale while his own child was still a toddler but I suppose that shows the steely-eyed focus of an imaginative & intelligent Artist at work.
I think that the most chilling line in this song is the very last one..brrrrrr!...

Safe to say that I'd like The Decemberists about 2,000X more if all of their songs sounded like this one....

This song is extremely disturbing. A fine, fine piece of gothic wrapped up in crunchy pop rock.
