The Dells were originally the El Rays - they changed their name in 1953.
The song was inspired by a party some female friends threw for them.
The 1956 version hit #4 on the R&B charts (Vee Jay Records), sold over a million copies, and became a romantic standard.
This was re-recorded in 1969 as "Oh What a Night" with a radically different arrangement and tempo. Released on the Cadet label, the remake scored a #10 position as it also sold over a million copies.
