Smile like You Mean It by The Killers

“Heard this at the barber's the other day. This song has a guitar solo to tell you it's rock like most American movies have female characters to tell you the main is hetero. The hook literally couldn't have a simpler melody. I detect some vocoder/autotune, but it fits right in with the organ synth effects. I love the singer's nasal mezzo-tenor croon - he's got a deep enough voice that it sounds familiar rather than whiny, like Rivers Cuomo and Dave Gahan had a baby voice-child. It's more about hanging out with the 'whee-oo-oo' synth than the lyrics, which are appropriately vague and nostalgic. I don't know if it's deathless music. Oh well.”

I'm a huge fan of The Killers. Sam's Town is a brilliant album, and I love Hot Fuzz and Day & Age as well. I first saw them live in 2009, and at the time it was an amazing experience; when I knew they were coming back this year, I was as excited as I was nervous. 4 years is some time, and Battleborn is just a generic, awful rock album. I still loved their oldies, and was still a huge fan, but I had no idea in what shape or form the band was in terms of live shows these days, particularly with a tour dedicated to their worst album so far. I was surprised to find out that, in terms of live act, they're even better now than they were in 2009, and that all the classics still have the same power they had 4 years ago. It was an absolutely brilliant show, and the band looks the happiest they've ever been. Hell, even the new songs sounded good live! However, for some reason, it was this hit in particular that packed the biggest nostalgia wave and emotional punch. Great show, still a great band   3
