What I probably was listening to most this week...20 years ago (Part 1). I still love What A Crying Shame. Like several of their albums, it was a nice mix of Raul Malo's cowrites with Nashville's greatest songwriters, and a few choice covers, including one of Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow" and this version of Jesse Winchester's "O What A Thrill." Malo remains a distinctive vocalist through both his solo work and the recent re-formation of the band (they're coming to Kansas City -- bassist Robert Reynolds' home town -- again in April). But I don't think they've every quite topped this release...it remains one of my all-time favorite albums. By the way, I had a choice of videos introduced by Marty Stuart and by Tammy Wynette...it was a tough choice! (Album released February 1, 1994)
Yes, one of the more surprising items in my CD collection. I love the stops and clipped phrasing in the chorus
