U is for The Underdogs. If you didn’t know that VIP was one of Berry Gordy’s many subsidiary labels, there are at least three items on the label in the photo that reveal this is a Motown record. The first is Clarence Paul is the producer. The second would be the name of the publishing, Jobete. Finally the most obvious of them all: the song was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. The Underdogs (named after the cartoon character) was the first single from Motown in January 1967. This track (and it’s B-Side MOJO Hannah) can be found on the five disc box The Complete Motown Singles Volume 7: 1967.
