“(late 1978, from album 'DOA: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle') A fine example of Throbbing Gristle's rhythmic control - there's actually a 12/8 structure if you listen for it here - where x is the baritone murmur and Y is the carrier-tone squeal, we hear x-x-x Y-Y-Y x-x-x Y-Y-Y sustain-Y. It doesn't feel 12/8 at first but distortion and static turn the little bleat groups into triplets. It's a bracing exploration of machine sounds. Shades of Steve Reich are in this track, though fewer than in some parts of the album. My dream world has Throbbing Gristle preserving Reich's penchant for turning small recorded spoken phrases into miniature rhythmic instruments. Alas that it's only a dream.”
