If you’ve been pining for Sonic Youth, Lee Ranaldo has been doing his best to carry the flame. This unexpected result from that band’s ashes strengthens the argument that Ranaldo was indeed Sonic Youth’s secret weapon. But now Thurston Moore delivers an album that reminds us of his hallowed past. Most everything about The Best Day harkens to the past, from the music to the photos of Moore’s mother which grace the album. But this isn’t necessarily just a nostalgic trip, this is Moore reminding us that his sound and his style are distinctly original and a part of who he is and not just a reminder of who he was.
