How come history barely remembers Tom Robinson Band, let alone as the rebellious voice it was? Was the punk generation really that homophobic?

I am not particularly political (i.e. right wing or left wing), but I do believe in Justice and Equality for all. TRB's anthem "Power in the Darkness" is a little over the top, but does express my beliefs about Justice and Equality.
From that brief period in the late 1970s when TRB were the hottest act around. Just noticed recently how closely the drum pattern resembles Grand Funk Railroad's "American band". Coincidence, surely.
