The Life Machine by Tubeway Army / Gary Numan

“(late 1978: from the album 'Tubeway Army') A low-key industrial sound - might be a heart beat - introduces the song for 10 seconds. Electric bass and, up top, a guitar played with very little amp back Numan's confident, gnawing tenor in the first verse. A rare sentiment: "I'm just an extra piece of dead meat to keep running -- why won't you let me die in peace? Why won't you let me die with some kind of honor? Why won't you let me die at all? I know -- you got your principles." The band lets an extra-long bridge welcome an accompanying baritone synth mutter. The mutter creeps higher in pitch through the rest of the song. Numan, with so harsh and grating a voice, always manages to me to sound somewhat subdued. The band has complete, deliberate control of their sound throughout.”
