Easy Living

SuperTymms 12 Nov 2014

The stir & fuss caused by the release of Heavy Weather at the height of the Punk and Disco era should not be underestimated. Birdland is now a Jazz Standard, a Classic. It's been covered a zillion times. Today we commemorate Jaco Pastorius's life (he was murdered). He revolutionised the bass guitar. He took pliers and pulled out the frets, inventing a new instrument. Listen to this track: the MELODY is played on bass using false harmonics, the BASS is played by the synth. This man turned the world upside down: fretless, long legato runs, chords, lead bass, pseudo classical guitar parts for the bass, I could go on, but no, let his music and legacy do that. Please enjoy this live performance from these master musicians.   7

Biggest band in my life. I saw more of their gigs than any other band. I saw them play in more cities than any other band. I heard them jam in the tour bus outside a gig. I ripped the frets out of a bass guitar and got monster finger blisters because of this. The woman I married played a fretless bass and we very nearly called our son Jaco. Ah! the sheer number of happy times that has happened to me, to us with Weather Report as background music is incredible, and this is a very special track. I do not have enough words. Life-changing music. In the punk era. In the prog rock era, in the glam rock era, in the country rock era, cold war - no future era. Ahhhh! the seventies, OMG. It's all good. And still good...   11
