I'm the same. Though I wasn't 100% taken with their last album, I figured the departure of Tim Smith would be their death knell. This suggests otherwise.
@simonp Mm, I didn't love the last one either - it's always Van Occupanther I go back to. This auguers well for the new record though. Tbh I can't really spot the lack of Tim.
@stellakoto Van Ocupanther is also the go-to for me. This direction definitely benefiting from a fuller drum kit sound though. I found with the last album that the two drawbacks were a similarity among the tracks in song structure and a lack of momentum, often from the backbeat.

@stellakoto judging by the comments, it seemed that the band had had enough of the reverential English folk rock vibe. And Tim hadn't.

3rd time I heard it and it's getting better all the time
