#Top31Tracksof2014: I really like "Ghost Stories". Now that that's out of the way, "Midnight" itself is, to me, one of the best tracks that Coldplay have ever done, hitting an emotional nerve without overdoing it or blatantly welding a stadium or radio ready chorus onto it. Chris Martin's modulated vocals are haunting, the gliding synths in the outro are gorgeous, and the subtle drive provided by the bass keeps the track from wallowing in its own misery. So, how does one improve an already excellent track? Giorgio Moroder answers that question by turning the introspection of the original outward, bursting forth that emotion into a devastating yet beautiful wash of synths, enhancing the piano chords, and adding that driving 4/4 beat to power the song even more. The result is 8 and a half minutes of beauty. #bestof2014
