@JonsBeard War is a great fucking album all the way through. The Unforgettable Fire's not too far off either. Several songs on The Joshua Tree are just astounding (though it's got a few duds on it too). I think U2 were a good to great band up to and including Achtung Baby (excluding Rattle and Hum, yeesh). War is the apex. It even has my absolute favorite drum sound on any record.
Must admit, I never took to anything they did after this album. I know it's silly berating rock stars from getting carried away with their own sense of self-importance (I mean, it's practically part of the job description) but I just found Bono and co too hard to take (I think it was that dance at Live Aid...). But those first two albums are inarguable.

@simonp I like their first two, but I think they got way better on their third and fourth albums.
