@thesunneversets@kemiladashdot Yeah, what was the deal with that? I ended up not watching it and just waiting for my Facebook feed to fill up after the announcement. Great choice, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with him.
@crawtonleek@kemiladashdot I assume there was some kind of weird decision from on high to pitch the announcement not towards people who like Doctor Who, but towards people who like Saturday evening television in general. Given that they didn't even bother to have Steven Moffat in attendance, I don't think the unveiling was "his" show...
@hades I'm a big Matt Smith fan but the last couple of seasons have been terribly mediocre writing-wise: sad, when the expectations from Moffat taking over were so high! I'm hugely optimistic that casting an actor who will perforce turn the entire dynamic on its head is a sign that they're keen to do something different and hopefully much less lazy in 2014...
Apart from most of the last series with a monster a week, I loved a lot of Steven Moffat stories (and Matt Smith). Saturday night was surreal. Dramatic suicide. Presumably it was to prevent leaks before filming next year and so that people can tell their children who Peter Capaldi is. Can think of no other reason this side of sanity. Peter Capaldi good news but feel squeamish suddenly about young female companions so hope they are feeling creative about that, too.
@alisonsghost I imagine this'll be the final nail in the coffin for Doctor-companion flirting. I think they tried to cap all that by making the Doctor a married man but apparently Moffat just doesn't have it in him to write for two young, good-looking actors without introducing sexual frisson. It'll be easier with Capaldi to remember that a 900+ year old alien obsessing about a twentysomething's bum is just icky...

I think Ian himself would have been a perfect Doctor

The whole thing took me by surprise. Not the choice, but the manner in which it was announced. I feel culturally challenged.

@kemiladashdot The manner in which it was announced was... bafflingly tacky. But never mind that, the actual announcement was a good one!

It's still too far for a Time Lord to fall in one evening, the Master must think all his Christmases have come at once.
