Yeh, I know about Daniel Johnston. He's had his struggles in life involving mental illness among other things but he has a unique bizarre childlike talent not unlike Andy Kaufman, in his way. I love the guy's work.... :-)
Thanks David! @debutch I find he's a fascinating talented artist and hugely moving...so simple and yet complex in effort & undertaking. I must investigate Andy Kaufman so more.
....You probably already know this...but when you said you was going to check out Andy Kaufman, you know that he's not a musician but instead, an actor ,right? I just thought that they are very similar in personality.
LOL abs. NONE taken! did you ever see the american TV series? Pure artistic genius there I can see what you meant about their childlike similarities but beyond Taxi I never ventured forth...
Y'know,
I've never actually seen "Taxi" at all but I know of it & Andy's character & also the Jim Carrey film where he plays Andy ( was that "Man on the Moon"?) And I read Kaufman's biography, too I always thought that both of these guys had an imagination that was a bit 'out there' ...They didn't think like 'normal' people, ....many of which found these two , child-like & quite irritating but then others, like me, thought that they are/were both borderline geniuses.
I may have run out of words to express my feelings about this particular performance. I must have watched it 100 times and cried every single time. Daniel has always seemed so vulnerable, even in his most lucid and creatively positive moments but the beauty of his vulnerability Vs his absolute determination to be 'Daniel' in this performance is simply overwhelming. And when he's done, he's gone. Like Daniel of old, that young crazy kid, "See ya" and off to do something else. I love him.
Honestly Chris @BertrandRustles thank you for echoing my sentiments exactly this morning when I saw this for the 1st time, I burst into tears and immediately Jammed it forthwith...I love him too and when he walks off the stage like a Boss it reminds me how fragile the whole experience of life is! Appreciate your comments so much. Its sure to be a most treasured Jam for me now too xx. Glad to be able to shine a little light on your evening!:)
The kids chorus is so poignant. I look at them and see Daniel at that age, vibrant and excited about everything. Mental health issues will affect at least a couple of those kids as they grow older as it has DJ. As a society we need to be prepared for that, protective of them and help see them through it.

That's not a load of people playing and not liking this. That's me playing it over and over again. Sorry...

He's new to me but even on a first watch I can tell that he writes and sings from the heart, very moving.
