On New Year's Eve I finished a year-long project in which I listened to Bob Dylan's entire catalog, courtesy of the 2013 47-disc box set The Complete Album Collection Vol. One. Series of Dreams is nearly the last song on the last disc. It's now part of an odds-and-ends collection called Side Tracks; it began life as an outtake from Dylan's 1989 album Oh Mercy, and is that rarest of beasts—an outtake that eventually became appended to greatest-hits albums. Since its first commercial appearance, on 1991's three-disc The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3, the song has wound up on innumerable hits packages. This is deserving. Series of Dreams is one of my favorite Dylan songs; its driving yet subtle rhythm speaks to the unstoppable nature of time while pushing hard against nostalgia, uncertainty, and the often irresistible avoidance of living in the now. Let us all try to do that more in 2015: be present now. Happy New Year, Jammers.
